Have your child make a collage inspired by the children’s book author and illustrator, Eric Carle.
What you’ll need
- Several sheets of white tissue paper
- Paint in different colors. Tempera paint is a good option because it’is washable and comes in bright colors.
- Paint brushes in various sizes
- Scissors
- Shape template (optional)
- White card stock or construction paper
- Glue
Here’s how to do it
Read aloud to your child a book (or books) by Eric Carle. Explain that Eric Carle wrote and illustrated the book(s). Ask your child how she thinks the illustrations were made. Explain how Eric Carle’s creates the illustrations in his books. Here’s a description from his Web site: .
Have your child decide what she is going to make a painting of. Have her paint the tissue paper in different colors, using different sized paint brushes and her fingers to paint. (Be sure to place something under the tissue paper since the paint will probably soak through.) Let the tissue paper dry. Have her cut out shapes from the colorful tissue paper to make the objects in the picture. If your child has difficulty cutting shapes you can use a shape template or help her cut the shapes out. Glue the shapes onto the paper.
